MANIERA commissions architects and artists to develop furniture and objects for use, offering them an excursion beyond their usual practice. By doing so, the gallery deliberately searches for collisions between the realms of architecture, design and art. Partner gallery A1043 selects objects with strong conceptual and/or sculptural qualities, without taking the period into account. Both young galleries complement each other seamlessly.
A1043 shows a selection of furniture created between 1983 and 1993 by Rei Kawakubo, the designer behind the clothing brand Comme des Garçons. Her furniture acts as an antipole to the predominant aesthetics at that time, such as the Italian design movements of Alchimia, or later Memphis Group with Ettore Sottsass as its most prominent member. In contrast to those expressive, multicolored designs, Kawakubo’s pieces had urban – almost brutal aesthetics that required an effort, a sensibility or even intellectual approach from its users.
In confrontation with the Kawakubo furniture, MANIERA introduces the work of artist and designer Stéphane Barbier Bouvet to the visitors of NOMAD. In Bouvet’s work, parallels can be found with the formal language and conceptual thinking of Kawakubo. Most considerably by the materials applied (raw, industrial elements and readymade items) as well as by the gestures made. Stéphane Barbier Bouvet fuses ideas of design, sculpture, and display. His work develops simultaneously – as a practice, a form of knowledge, and a comment.
