Summer Residency At Henry Van de Velde's Villa Westhinder

This summer, MANIERA takes over the iconic Villa Westhinder for its third off-site exhibition in Knokke and the second time showing in a Henry Van de Velde residence.
 
The Noordhinder-Westhinder or Colman-Saverys complex, designed in 1931, is a striking modernist double villa perched on the Zeedijk in Het Zoute. Commissioned by coffee merchant and art patron Maurice Colman alongside painter Albert Saverys, the villa boldly departs from typical Anglo-Norman seaside architecture. Its flat roof, ocean liner–inspired design, horizontal brick-and-concrete façade, rounded corners, finely finished brickwork, and metal tubular railings reflect Henry Van de Velde’s pioneering vision. Protected as a national monument since 1994, Villa Westhinder remains a rare architectural gem on the Belgian coast.
 
MANIERA is known for situating its exhibitions in exceptional historic buildings, where architecture and design enter into meaningful dialogue. Previous shows have been held at Hôtel Wolfers by Henry Van de Velde, the Van Wassenhove House by Juliaan Lampens, the Black House by Huib Hoste, House Roelants by Willy Van der Meeren, and the Art Deco Villa Danckaert by Jean-Baptiste Dewin. For this residency, MANIERA presents prototypes from its most successful designs produced since 2014, including rare pieces long sold out. These objects offer visitors a unique insight into the gallery’s creative process and curated collection.
 
Alongside MANIERA’s design pieces, Olivia and Julie Saverys — the great-granddaughters of the villa’s original owner — present their paintings, deeply inspired by the ever-present sea visible from Villa Westhinder’s windows. The sisters incorporate elements like sand into their work, crafting art that resonates closely with their family home and its coastal environment.
